Running as fast as we could, we arrived across the street from my place in two minutes to hear volleys of shots ringing out. I could see several men taking cover behind the burned out remains of the home next door to mine. The sound of gunfire came from the beachside of my house, and we assumed it was Maria shooting until I heard the sound of an AK47 racking off several automatic bursts.

I knew none of us had an AK. “Maria has a friend helping her. Watch and follow me. Have a fire grenade ready to throw,” I said as we snuck closer to the enemy. We were fifty feet away when I motioned for Ollie to be ready to throw her mortar shell. I lobbed my high explosive shell sideways over my head and then saw Ollie wind up and throw hers underhanded. Mine was still in the air when her firebomb exploded dead center of the fighters. The gunfire stopped, and flames engulfed the entire ruins just as mine exploded. The fire raged, but I never saw anyone moving. Only horrific screams escaped the inferno. The bastards were now crispy critters.

I turned to see Maria and the black-clad stalker walking to us with weapons raised. The stranger reached up and pulled the black balaclava from his head. “Damn, I wish I’d thought of making hand grenades. I’m Thad Mills, and I’ve been watching you for a couple of years.”

I approached and shook his hand. “I’m Jeff Mann, and I’ve been looking for you for months. I knew I wasn’t alone, but you’re too good at hiding.”

Thad laughed, “I only come out at night when all you youngsters are getting your beauty sleep. I must say the scenery improved a hell of a lot when your girlfriends joined us.”

Maria gave the old man a hug. “Thad saved me from those men. He killed several before the second group arrived.”

Thad gazed at Ollie. “I’ll bet you pitched on a women’s softball team. That was one hell of a pitch.”

Ollie smiled and giggled. “I pitched for a team playing in an industrial league for several years. I’m Ollie, Maria’s sister.”

Thad took Ollie’s hand and kissed it. “My! My! How can one family have two women so beautiful it takes your breath away?”

My body tensed, and my fists clenched. Emma spoke, “Well! My God, Jeff, you’re jealous.”

“I am not,” came from my lips.

Ollie saw my face. “Thad, after we check for survivors, could you join us for some lunch?”

Thad took her hand again as I thought about shooting him. “Of course, my dear. That’s if your father is okay with that.”

Ollie wrapped her arms around me and then replied, “He’s our husband.”

Maria’s eyes opened wide. “Sorry, Thad, but we’re taken. Jeff saved us, and we’ve grown very fond of him. We’d better scout around and make sure all those asshats are dead.”

I smiled and took Thad’s hand. “Glad to have you with us. I’ll take Ollie and cover the western half of the island while you take Maria and cover the northeastern half.
